I Hate ITC Garamond

Course: DES 325 Typography I

Professor: Kelcey Gray

Time Frame: 4 weeks

Tools: Adobe InDesign & Photoshop

Project Brief

Explore the relationship between font, point size, leading, column width, legibility and the implementation of the grid. Apply your knowledge of hierarchy to different elements of a book; the table of contents, chapter opener, and spreads.

Design Problem

How can I visually represent Michael Bierut's strong opinions depicted in his essay, I Hate ITC Garamond?

Research

Choose visual motifs to represent Bierut's big opinions in an engaging and fitting way. I chose black pages, big type, sideways type, and negative space to guide me when designing. I also had to choose my typeface from 5 options: Adobe Jenson, FF Scala, Plantin MT Pro, Factoria, and Soleil.

Making

I decided on using a 12 column grid and a hang line 1.5 inches from the top of the page. The paragraph widths varied between 5 to 7 columns wide, but the difference was not unbalanced as it was cohesive with what was going on with the page.

Table of Contents

The TOC was somewhat challenging as I initially experienced some tunnel vision with trying to limit it to one spread. Everything looked crammed and ignored my negative space motif.
